Vulnerability: a strength or a weakness?

Reflecting on my own leadership journey, I’ve often pondered the role of vulnerability in leadership—is it a strength or a weakness?

  • Humanising Leadership: When leaders display vulnerability, they reveal their humanity, complete with flaws, insecurities, and challenges. This willingness to open up fosters trust within the team, granting permission for others to share their vulnerabilities and seek support.

  • Authentic Connection: Vulnerability is a key ingredient of authentic leadership. By sharing personal stories and experiences, leaders connect with their team on a deeper level, empathising with their struggles and emotions. This fosters understanding, empathy, and stronger relationships within the team.

  • Fostering Growth: Embracing vulnerability means admitting to imperfections and mistakes, creating an environment where failures are viewed as learning opportunities rather than sources of shame. This cultivates a culture of innovation, risk-taking, and continuous improvement within the team.

  • Encouraging Communication: Openness and vulnerability in leadership pave the way for transparent communication. By creating a safe space for team members to express their thoughts, concerns, and ideas, leaders foster a culture of trust, collaboration, and creativity.

Contrary to the outdated notion of a strong leader being flawless and always in control, vulnerability should be regarded as an integral aspect of modern leadership.
