The second born of 4 children, Tony was brought up by a heroic, selfless, English mother, after his Irish father abandoned his responsibilities and walked out on the family. Struggling to keep a roof over their heads, his mother was forced to make the heart-wrenching decision to put Tony and his elder brother temporarily into Nazareth House Children’s Home. Once his mother got on her feet, and found somewhere for the family to live, Tony and his older brother returned to the family home. He grew up on a council estate in Plymouth. Life was hard. His mother had to look after the 4 children, and so was unable to do any paid work. Although clearly a clever pupil, school was difficult for Tony. Sport provided an early outlet for his frustration. Boxing, inside and outside the ring, channelled some of his energy and talent. However, the need to hustle and earn money, saw Tony leave school at 16, after his ‘O’ levels. He then decided to juggle full-time work during the day, with evening classes at the College of Further Education, where he successfully passed 3 ‘A’ levels, and went on to complete undergraduate studies at the University of Plymouth, and postgraduate at Goldsmith’s College, University of London.

Fast forward, Tony did indeed overcome the challenges he had encountered in his early years, to enjoy a uniquely privileged overseas career occupying several senior leadership roles.
